Channel 2 News is reporting that the innocent man killed last night as a result of a police chase through northside streets was Rev. Nathaniel Cole of the radio show "God's Revealing Tabernacle" on KSTL 690 AM.
From ktvifox2.com:
Another police chase into north St. Louis, but this time it ends in death and injury. A religious radio show host was killed, and his wife is critically injured.
A source tells us the man killed Monday night was Rev. Nathaniel Cole. He had a radio show at KSTL 690AM. In fact, he was supposed to be on the air at 1:00pm. His wife Annie is in surgery right now. They were involved in Monday night's chase.
The suspects [allegedly] flourished a gun, and at one point [allegedly] fired at them. The chase ended right around Broadway and Calvary when the suspect's white Ford Bronco crossed the center line and slammed into the red SUV with the innocent couple in their 50s inside. Rev. Cole was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SLMPD doesn't usually chase cars-- that's why we have such high car theft-- but when the punks are flourishing a weapon and firing at police, a chase is more than justified.

Let me say this, because I must admit that I don't say it enough on this site: Cops have a dangerous and largely thankless job.
They should be paid more. They should be given all the equipment they need to do their jobs. And their should be a better, more honest dialogue between cops and the community they police.
The chase last night may have been completely justified. The fact is that no matter what the police say happened, some people will doubt their version. Not because they are cop-haters, but because SLPD and other area police departments have lied in the past. They have also gone out of their way to defend officers that turned out to be criminals and should have been fired immediately.
The trust is no longer there. And so in case like this, where it very well may be that the kids in that car were criminals dumb enough to even shoot themselves in the chase, people still have doubts.
Two systematic things that breed such distrust is the lack of local control of the police department and the decision to do away with the requirement that all officers must live in the City.
We are not "all in this together." And we should be.
It's not us (cops and community) against them (criminals).
It's us (criminals and those regularly mistaken for them) against them (cops and people who don't have to fear the police).
It shouldn't be that way, but it is. And it's not just one side's problem to fix.

Hey, I saw that you used my MLK speech video for one of your previous blog entries. YouTube deleted it off their servers for innappropriate language, so here's the new link (just in case you'd like to update, since I still get a lot of traffic to my site from people looking for the MLK speech).

A family man and upstanding citizen is dead. This should be underestimated. Innocent people are being killed because of police chases throughout the country. Imagine that being your family member(s). How would you feel then? Surely the actions by the criminal ultimately are to blame, but police and the community have to find a better way to mitigate such tragedies.
