8th Ward goes with Downs and Buford

By Antonio D. French

Filed Friday, February 17 at 4:30 AM

Sources tell PUB DEF that despite strong endorsements by Alderman Steve Conway and Committeewoman Tishaura Jones, school board President Darnetta Clinkscale did not get the 8th Ward Democrat's endorsement last night. Instead, the nod went to Peter Downs and Clinkscale's running mate, Jim Buford.

Despite running on different slates, I expect a mixed slate to win. But instead of Downs and Buford, it could be Clinkscale and Jones.

I think Slay has a better shot with Buford than Clinkscale. I think Clinkscale as board president has taken over for Vince Schoemehl as the face of this district's misdirection. And if you've gone to any of the candidate forums, you have seen that Ms. Clinkscale comes across as coached, a puppet reading from a script, someone incapable of admitting mistakes or sympathizing with parents.

But Peter Downs has become the candidate of the teachers, of the district's mistreated workers, and of parents who have been reading his St. Louis Schools Watch newsletter for nearly three years.

When Schoemehl resigned a few months ago, Slay should have appointed Downs to the board. He got the next highest number of votes in the last election and if the mayor wanted to show respect for the democratic process, he would have appointed the parent, Peter Downs, not the rich guy, Jim Buford.
