Comptroller reacts to Board's move

By Antonio D. French

Filed Wednesday, March 15 at 1:03 PM

The following is a statement from Comptroller Darlene Green on the St. Louis Police Board changing the department’s civilian employee residency rule:

"City taxpayers fund the police department and deserve local control of its operations. The decision on the residency requirement, civilian review and the department’s budget belong to St. Louis, not Jefferson City."

Why are KC's and STL's police still under state control?

Why has this not changed? All it takes is a bill or petition and a vote of the people.

Who in the state would vote against giving local control back to these two cities?

According to my friends at coptalk, it is under state control because of local corruption.

They assert that St. Louis should remain under state control, since our local politicians are too corrupt to control the police.

What does everyone think about this?

Cop Talk?

Try reading historical fact.

Police in the two cities are uder state control because od differing political views during the Civil War.

I think your cop friends like the state control because they seem to get whatever they want--regardless if it is good for the city or what the taxpayers paying thier salaries want.

You misunderstand my comment. It is under state control because of the civil war, however, KC was given the chance to be locally controlled, however, this was eventually ended due to corruption, according to copstalk.

I can see valid points on both sides of the argument. Many people are afriad of the police, and the police are afraid of loosing benefits, or worse, with new oversight.

Hey Francis, now that you realize how renegade the Police Board is (recent Mayor's blog post shares our Comptroller's concern), maybe you'll actually sign that CRB bill into law.

And if hizzoner's excuse is that the CRB won't be approved by the Police Board, then stop making excuses and take action. Now is the time to lobby the state for local control!
